Importance of Diet
The importance of diet to overall health is not a news. 2,400 years ago Hippocrates said “Let food be your medicine and medicine be your food.” With people living longer, poor nutrition and diet now account for at least 4 of the top 10 leading causes for death in the United States. The top offenders are heart disease, cancer, stroke and diabetes, all directly linked to our food. The fact is with proper diet, these and many other associated conditions can be avoided. A healthy diet is essential for proper health.
Eating right can be challenging, but is all about proper variety, moderation and balance. Many times we think we are eating right when in fact we are pushing our balance of carbs, proteins and fats in the wrong direction, or entirely missing essential vitamins and minerals. For a variety of health reasons, it’s critical to avoid caffeine, sugar, tobacco and alcohol.
Equally important is getting the proper amount of sleep. When you sleep, your body releases certain hormones that assist in growth, repair and immunity. This is also a time for your mind to relax and rejuvenate.
